Max Pechstein. Espressionismo dell’anima – Palazzo Zabarella, Padua
From 24 October 2026 to 14 March 2027, the Palazzo Zabarella in Padua presents the exhibition “Max Pechstein. Espressionismo dell’anima” (Expressionism of the Soul). After Rotterdam, Bernried and Linz, the historic palazzo is the next venue of the international Pechstein tour — and the first in Italy, a country that shaped Pechstein on several of his journeys.
The major monographic exhibition brings together more than 120 works spanning over five decades — paintings, drawings, watercolours, photographs, sketches and personal objects — and tells the story of the artist’s life and creative process, from the Brücke years to his late work.
Max Pechstein. The Adventure of Expressionism — Lentos Kunstmuseum Linz
From 23 April to 30 August 2026, the Lentos Kunstmuseum Linz presents the exhibition “Max Pechstein. The Adventure of Expressionism”. Recognised by many contemporaries as a leading member of the artists’ group »Brücke«, Max Pechstein occupied a central position within the German avant-garde in the first decades of the 20th century.
The retrospective brings together more than 100 works — including numerous Baltic and South Seas landscapes on view in Austria for the first time — and spans the artist’s most important creative phases. A particular focus is on Pechstein’s relationship with Wolfgang Gurlitt, founder of the Lentos’s predecessor institution.
MAX PECHSTEIN – VISION AND CREATION, BUCHHEIM MUSEUM
From 19 July to 26 October 2025, the BUCHHEIM MUSEUM presents the exhibition “MAX PECHSTEIN – VISION AND CREATION”. Max Pechstein shaped Expressionism with his powerfully coloured paintings and forceful prints, which are regarded as icons of the movement to this day. A comprehensive retrospective, part of an international world tour, is now devoted to his artistic vision. After opening at the Kunsthal Rotterdam, the Buchheim Museum is the exhibition’s second venue.
The broad spectrum of Pechstein’s work unfolds across various genres: the focus is on paintings, drawings, watercolours and prints, complemented by design sketches, letters and photographs offering fascinating insights into his creative process. The chronological arc spans from his early work through his formative years in the artists’ group »Brücke« and the major works of the 1910s and early 1930s to his late work.
Pechstein’s vision, striving for harmony between man and nature, is reflected in his journeys to places of longing, from the South Seas to the Baltic. His works capture these impressions and form a counterpoint to the social upheavals and humanitarian crises of an era of wars. In the face of today’s ecological and political challenges, his message of harmony and closeness to nature remains highly topical.
Max Pechstein: Expression of Harmony at the Kunsthal Rotterdam
From 28 March to 15 June 2025, the Kunsthal Rotterdam presents the exhibition “Max Pechstein: Expression of Harmony”. This comprehensive retrospective shows more than 50 paintings as well as prints, woodcuts, drawings, photographs and personal objects of the German Expressionist Max Pechstein (1881–1955).
As a member of the artists’ group “Die Brücke”, Pechstein decisively shaped the development of Expressionism with dynamic and colourful compositions. His works, inspired by journeys to Nidden, Leba and the Palau Islands, reflect his striving for a harmonious relationship between man and nature.
The exhibition also offers insights into Pechstein’s personal life and his artistic development in a time of radical change in Europe. It is realised in close cooperation with the Institut für Kulturaustausch in Tübingen and the Kunstsammlungen Zwickau.

Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz and Zwickau — a look into the collections

Two cities, one exhibition: Chemnitz and Zwickau jointly present special works from their art collections — familiar and waiting to be rediscovered. Under the title Brückenschlag surprising pairs of objects meet, opening up new perspectives and revealing hidden connections.
The exhibition in the FreiRAUM shows 25 works from both museums — digitally and in the original — and invites dialogue: between artworks, cities and visitors.
A contribution to Chemnitz, European Capital of Culture 2025 — and to the initiative C the Unseen.
During the extensive renovation of the KUNSTSAMMLUNGEN ZWICKAU Max Pechstein Museum from mid-2024 to the end of 2028, the collection is being presented in an exciting interim venue at the Galerie am Domhof in Zwickau’s historic centre. This special exhibition offers visitors an interactive and attractive way to experience important works even while the museum is closed.
Especially in the context of “Chemnitz, European Capital of Culture 2025”, a “best of” of the art collections is on display, focusing on works created during Max Pechstein’s journey to Palau.
MAX.RAUM
A highlight of the exhibition is the MAX.RAUM, dedicated to the famous Zwickau Expressionist Max Pechstein. Here, visitors can discover his life and work in a special way, with all their senses. Numerous audio and video installations offer deep insights into his time in Palau and create a lively, interactive art experience that delights art lovers and newcomers alike.
